On Easter morning, the chance killings of two fathers in the Inner City of New Haven, one a leader of a mosque, the other a Scottish professor at Yale, sparks a riot. Meanwhile the son of the Scotsman and the daughter of the Imam meet in the police precinct to file their testimonial statements, and an unusual kind of love affair further challenges the two cultures at violent odds with each other. This feature screenplay has been researched and presented in multiple readings (Nuyricans, NYU) and is ready for production.

WOMAN UNBURIED

(original feature length screenplay)

This original feature length screenplay previously titled DEER WOMAN, was developed with the approval of tribes in Arizona and Nebraska, and has been optioned by Chris Eyre (Smoke Signals, Skins). Approved for production in New Mexico by the New Mexico Film commission under a $5M budget, production is contingent on finding a guarantor. A supernatural thriller in the genre of PAN’S LABRYNTH and BLACK ORPHEUS, it raises awareness about a history of crimes against women on reservations by non-Indians and a supernatural entity that serves her own kind of justice. A young Indian girl has been raped by a farm boy, and no lawmakers take action as tensions run high between farmers and Indians. On the day of pow-wow and the county fair, an angry white farmer plows up an Indian burial ground, and a supernatural entity known as Deer Woman returns to take revenge as the farmer’s son tries to court the beautiful grand daughter of a medicine woman that the Omaha teens have nicknamed Deer Woman.

This short teaser about the myth of Deer Woman was shot on the Omaha Reservation in collaboration and with the approval of the tribe, and has received well over 75,000 views on YouTube.
